Off the case. The attorneys representing George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman who fatally shot unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, are withdrawing from the case. WJXT was there Tuesday when the lawyers made their decision public.

 

 “One of the things every defense attorney tells his client is don’t talk to the prosecutors, don’t talk to the cops, and frankly don’t talk to anybody until we get control of the situation and then do it through counsel.”

 

But Zimmerman’s attorneys say their client didn’t listen. In fact, they say Zimmerman called the prosecuting attorney. Pus, the former watchman reportedly stopped calling his lawyers back. So now — his defense team is speaking openly about the case.

 

Defense attorney Mark Garagos — who’s not officially involved in the Zimmerman case — told Anderson Cooper his jaw dropped after hearing the news:

 

 “Oh my god. I’m sitting here Anderson and this is just a train wreck of all sorts of proportions.”

 

Speaking of train wrecks, that’s Zimmerman’s mental state — according to his now ex-attorneys. In that news conference Tuesday — the attorneys said Zimmerman was quote “far from Florida.” Here’s MSNBC :

 

 “You can’t imagine what it’s like hiding in a room trying to save your life treated like a mushroom for those of you who know the second half of that joke, not being able to communicate with your friends and family openly. I can’t go to the grocery store.”

 

Earlier this week Zimmerman did set up a website soliciting donations for his legal defense fund. And though they’ve withdrawn from the case — the attorneys say they still think he acted in self-defense. As for what’s next — WESH says that will be discussed sometime within the next 2 days.

 

“We should know by the end of the week whether George Zimmerman will be charged with the death of Trayvon Martin.”

 

The prosecutors already announced the case will not be presented to a grand jury. By default, in Florida — that means Zimmerman can’t be charged with first degree murder.
