(Image Source: Latino Daily News )   BY JEREMY TRUITT   The funeral for the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took place Friday with numerous world leaders in attendance. Sky News reports. “World leaders have gathered in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, for the funeral of the President Hugo Chavez. Two million mourners have already filed past the former leader’s glass-covered coffin.” The funeral was held at a military academy in an intimate setting where notable figures like Cuban President Raul Castro and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended. According to officials, Chavez will be embalmed and placed on permanent display. (Via NPR ) With ongoing Venezuela-U.S. tension, it’s no surprise the U.S. sent an envoy consisting only of a current U.S. Representative, a former U.S. Representative and a member of the embassy. “The cast of this memorial service audience read like a who’s who of all of Washington’s least favorite people. All the people Washington has a difficult time with, and all the people Hugo Chavez has good relations with.” ( Via BBC ) Outside of the official delegation, Reverend Jesse Jackson gave a speech appealing for better U.S.-Venezuela relations and calling for people to dedicate their lives to public service. “It’s time to forge a practical, productive relationship that will lead to normalization of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Venezuela.” ( Via CNN ) “Death is certain. Life is uncertain. Thus a life of service matters.” ( Via  Al Jazeera ) Chavez has been hailed as revolutionary and a champion of the poor over his 14-years in office, but some economists say his legacy may not be a good one. The Wall Street Journal breaks down the numbers. In the past 14 years, the annual inflation rate averaged 22%, while the stock market size of companies declined from 7.6% to a paltry 1.6% of GDP and labor force participation declined from 52% to 46%. However on a good note, GDP per capita rose from around $4,000 to $11,000 during that time as well. Until a general election can be held, Nicolas Maduro is filling in as the interim president. The laws state an election must take place within 30 days.
