Image: WTVR BY JASMINE BAILEY One Massachusetts woman posted a picture on Facebook trying to be funny. Well, after that picture went viral - most weren’t laughing. Here’s NBC’s Today and WHDH. “In this picture Lindsey can be seen flipping off the tomb of the Unknowns and pretending to scream in front of a sign requesting silence and respect.” “Stone who works at an assisted living home where some residents are veterans was in Arlington on a work trip. This picture’s creating a firestorm of outrage including a ‘Fire Lindsey Stone’ Facebook page…” That Facebook page now has almost 17 thousand likes and it keeps increasing. A writer for Gawker notes , a former service member started the page and calls for the termination of Lindsey from her job at LIFE, an assisted living organization. The page’s creator wrote, “Let her employer know how much of a waste of oxygen this disrespectful person is…” The picture was originally taken in October; behind the camera was Lindsey’s co-worker. After the picture began to attract outrage — Lindsey removed it from her Facebook page and wrote this as her initial response . “Whoa whoa whoa… wait. This is just us, being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general. Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY we meant no disrespect to people that serve or have served our country.” But it wasn’t so obvious to her employer at LIFE. They released a statement on their Facebook page saying… “…both employees have been placed on unpaid leave pending the results of an internal investigation. This photograph in no way reflects the opinions or values of the LIFE organization, which holds our nation’s veterans in the highest regard. We are proud to have veterans serving on our staff and board of trustees, and we value their service…” But is this whole situation just being blown out of proportion? A commentator for WFXT seems to think so. “It was a stupid goofy thing that people do and it was an inside joke. She saw a sign that said silent and not rude so that’s what she did. … This was dumb but it’s not the end of the world, people need to calm down about this she knows she made a mistake.” Lindsey did eventually release an official apology to the Boston Herald that said: “ We sincerely apologize for all the pain we have caused by posting the picture we took... We never meant any disrespect to any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly. It was meant merely as a visual pun, intending to depict the exact opposite of what the sign said...” There is now a “Hire Lindsey Stone” Facebook page with 24 likes.
