Erik Michielsen: What is the importance of understanding a problem from different perspectives?

Hammans Stallings: So, I'm not sure if it was Einstein or who said it but, you know, the same mind that led to the creation of a problem is rarely the one that leads to the -- the resolution of that problem. In so many different fields, the major breakthroughs don't come from within that field alone. It's a fresh set of eyes. It's someone who has a different pattern recognition mechanism and they also have a different set of moves, a different set of things in their wheel-- in their wheelhouse, in their toolbox to resolve it. So, you know, a problem may not necessarily lend itself to structuring the way that a particular field has thought it about for a long time. And so, the field itself may not be the one that actually gets to resolve it. And so, being able to try on different types of different perspectives on a -- on a problem. It's kind of like a Swiss Army Knife, you know, you think about, okay, here's the issue. Do I use the, you know, the can opener? Do I use the magnifying glass? And so you have to -- you don't always know going into the problem what it's going to cause it to unravel and open. And so, you have to have a, say, a set of tools that you can try for a little bit and play around with it before you find the one that causes the most resolution of that problem.
