(Image source: TV Line ) BY LOGAN TITTLE   Former Vice President Al Gore announced he is selling his network, Current TV, to the Arab television network Al Jazeera.   “It will close Current and launch a new channel with the hope of reaching more American viewers. Al Jazeera plans to double its staff and open new bureaus.” ( CNN )   “The move could boost Al Jazeera's reach from 5 million U.S. homes to 40 million.” ( WVII )   With the purchase of Current TV, Al Jazeera plans to increase the number of staff members in the U.S. while adding to the company’s existing operations in Washington, New York, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.   But a writer for the Los Angeles Times says Al Jazeera shouldn’t count its chickens before they hatch. This purchase is simply an opportunity to obtain more viewers, not a guarantee.   Once Al Jazeera purchased the company for an undisclosed amount, the second largest cable provider in the U.S. — Time Warner Cable — dropped Current TV’s channel.   “Without Time Warner Cable, which is the largest distributor in New York City and Los Angeles, Current TV is in only about 50 million homes."   But some are pulling for Al Jazeera and betting it’ll do just fine. Hillary Clinton gave a statement on the recent purchase saying viewership is already increasing in America because it’s “real news.”   “You may not agree with it, but you feel like you’re getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news...”   So far, no official announcement has been made as to when Al Jazeera will start adding to its U.S. operation, but sources say sometime as early as spring of this year.
