Whiskey Distillery Turns Leftovers Into Biofuel for Cars - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A whiskey distillery in Scotland has agreed to turn their left over by-products from the distillation process into biofuel energy for vehicles. Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire working with a company started at Napier University in Edinburgh will turn their waste into butanol, a usable fuel.

Before the deal was made, the waste, which is high in sugar content, was used for feeding livestock or as a fertilizer. Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, called the project “an important step in the development of a business, which combines two iconic Scottish industries: whisky and renewables. This project demonstrates that innovative use of existing technologies can utilize resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy."

This is the first partnership of its kind and has funding from Zero Waste Scotland to get it off the ground.

The distillery spends over 400 thousand dollars a year in waste removal, but the partnership will turn that expense into a profit for the company, while contributing something innovative to the environment and the world of renewable energy.
