Rhiannon Ally: And we can’t all look like supermodels of course but that does not mean you can’t look great in clothes. Better caught up with TLC’s fashion guru Clinton Kelly, to find out what to wear and what not to wear this summer.
Clinton Kelly: Look at this; somebody is ready for a date. So, if you wear this on one day a month --
Lesley: When Clinton Kelly talks, women listen. He has been telling us the rules of dressing for seventh season on TLC’s What Not to Wear.
Clinton Kelly: We have a good time. We laugh everyday which is a great thing. They are crazy people. They just keep getting crazier and crazier but it is fun. It keeps me on my toes.
Lesley: And now, Clinton is taking your summer style. Here are Clinton’s rules for beating the hit without looking like a hot mess. First, the skinny on shorts.
Clinton Kelly: Shorts, you know shorts are tricky because you want to keep the leg line as long as possible but you want to wear shorts. So, I would say that a Bermuda short is probably the easiest length for any woman to wear. That stops at the top of the knee or if you do not like your kneecap, you go just below the kneecap.
Lesley: Next, how to rock this sexy summer dress without letting it all hang out.
Clinton Kelly: Well, you have to be careful of either strapless dresses, like a tube top dress or a spaghetti strap dress. If you have a broad shoulder or if you have a large bust because a small strap can actually make a large bust look even bigger and that can throw your proportion out of the whack sometimes. So, you can’t go wrong with classic V- neck, maybe a thicker strap to conceal a supporter bra, a nice defined waist in a flared skirt.
Lesley: And the go-to summer essentials, no wardrobe should be without.
Clinton Kelly: I would take a white skirt or a white trouser would be a really great option to have this summer. In particular, a gladiator sandal, even a high heeled gladiator sandal, something embellished would be a nice thing to have for your feet. And the colors of the season really are those with sort of citrusy colors like orange, lemon yellow and lime green.
Lesley: And last but not the least, the final word on flip-flops.
Clinton Kelly: I would say the biggest fashion faux pas, people make in general is the flip-flop worm everywhere. The flip-flops are the most casual shoe you can wear. So, they should be only worn in the most casual situations like the beach, the pool. You do not wear them to work. You do not wear to the doctor’s office, the dentist’s office. Just maybe getting groceries; that is the only time I would love them to sort of not in at the pool or at the beach.
Lesley: Now, we couldn’t resist putting Clinton to the test, doing what he does best and our producer Beth put her outfit on the line.
Beth: Okay. I am going to take one for the team. Go ahead Clinton, tell me.
Clinton Kelly: Yeah. This outfit, the proportions are a little off on this outfit. What you have done here is to do a long top and then cropped pants, okay. And what you are doing is making it look like you have a really long torso and you’re really shortening the line of the leg here. So, I would say you could either shorten this top or wear this top in the future with a longer pant that would keep the leg line longer and a high heel but right now --
Beth: High heel really?
Clinton Kelly: Well, this top? With a white trouser and a high heel like a gladiator sandal would be a nice option for you but right now, with the flat, because it is a long top, you look squashed, closer to the ground.
Beth: I am pretty close to the ground.
Clinton Kelly: Well, you look even closer. You look like Spanky from the Little Rascals. Is that what you wanted to hear?
Beth: No, not really.
Lesley: Ouch. For Better, I am Lesley.
Rhiannon Ally: Oh, poor Beth but great advice Clinton. You can catch Clinton and Stacy in the ninth season of What Not to Wear on TLC.
