What Results to Expect from Hair Transplant

After follicular unit hair transplantation most patients want to know how long it will take before my hair looks normal.
And again, if we look at the hair immediately after the transplantation, your existing hair will be what it looked like right before we started.
We don’t shave any hair or remove any hair during the procedure. So what you had, you’ll walk out with.
The tiny little grafts are actually chest hairs that are a millimeter long, so just a fraction of an inch long. So they don’t even show.
So you are able to cover what we have done with your existing hair and style your hair as you did, the day after surgery, the same as you would have the day before surgery.
So for the first week or so you are going to want to be careful with the styling. You want to be careful with combing because you can scrape the graft so you want to be very gentle with the scalp.
But we can shampoo, we can put product in, style our hair just generally.
At the end of one week we remove the sutures that are back here and they are hidden by your existing hair. The sutures are the stitches that we put in to close up that little area where we have taken the strip.
Those are removed and then basically it is a waiting game. We wait for the little grafts to scab and the scabs to fall off and the scabs fall off at 7 to 10 days.
They take a little hair that we have transplanted with them out and it leaves the hair follicle behind.
The hair follicle will then start to grow a new hair bulb, that’s the basis of the hair, and that will take about 90 days before we start to see new hair growth.
So between the procedure and three months we don’t see much happening. There’s scabbing for the first 7 to 10 days and then nothing.
There’s nothing you can do to hurt the grafts after the first week. So you can exercise, swim, everything normally.
At three months the new hairs will start to come out. Between the third and sixth month we get about 80 percent of the hair to grow, and between the sixth and ninth month another 15 percent and now we are up to about 95 percent.
Between the ninth and twelfth month you get the rest of the hairs. So by 12 months we know the full effect of that transplant.
Oftentimes women that come in will have extreme loss and will need more than one session.
Those multiple sessions are usually spaced at least three months apart if we are in a hurry, and anytime after three months if we’ve got time and we want to see what the first session gave us in response to that transplant.
