Hi! I am Josh, medical correspondent and today I will be discussing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a name given to a series of symptoms that arise from increasing pressure on the nerve in the wrist. This increase in pressure can result from everyday activity including excess of typing, simply line work or pretty much anything where your wrists are actively engaged. The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include weakness, numbness, pain in the hands and wrist and can eventually worsen to inability to make a fist or tingling in your hands.
These symptoms can be alleviated typically by reducing the stress on your wrist for a couple of weeks, coupled with wearing a brace so that your wrist stays straight and you avoid the bending and twisting.
However, if these symptoms persist for a long time, your doctor may suggest that you get surgery. However, it's comforting to know that the surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome is quick, safe and there are very rarely recurrences of carpal tunnel syndrome thereafter. If you actively use your wrists frequently, you can prevent your chances of getting carpal tunnel syndrome by performing stretching exercise to condition your wrist as well as by wearing a brace to make sure that your wrist stays straight while you are performing these active tasks with your wrist.
