Image: CNN BY JASMINE BAILEY A new milestone for same-sex couples— they can now be wed in the historic Washington National Cathedral. News 12: “Episcopal leaders are expected to make that announcement today. The 106-year-old cathedral draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.” CNN reports , The American Episcopal Church is intimately connected with the Church of England, which last week approved the advancement of male priests in same-sex committed relationships to the position of bishop. But those relationships must be celibate. Washington, Maine and Maryland all legalized same-sex marriages in 2012. At that time, it was already legal in the nation's capital. But WCPO reports — this new change in Washington National Cathedral is one of the first of its kind. “This will be among the first Episcopal churches to make that change in the nation… The 106-year-old cathedral has been the site of funerals of funerals for presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.” The cathedral was also the site of the inaugural prayer services for four presidents, including Barack Obama. According to ABC News , the church’s heads say God would be in support for the newly implemented change.   “In a statement the cathedral’s dean said, ‘including gays and lesbians in the formal right of marriage is what Jesus would have done.’” And a writer for the Washington Post notes— “…The cathedral’s stature and the image of same-sex couples exchanging vows in the soaring Gothic structure visited by a half-million tourists each year is symbolically powerful.”   To wed at the National Cathedral, one member of the couple must be baptized into the Church, and both must commit to a Christian marriage of "lifelong faithfulness, love, forbearance and mutual comfort."
