Volvo on the Green Trail at Geneva 2009
Host: Here at the Geneva Motor Show this year, it’s the environment- friendly engine innovations that are getting the greatest attention. Volvo cars that has unveiled no less than seven extremely economical drive E models sees a great deal of potential in these new models.
Stephen Odell: It’s great to have seven products that are all segment leading fuel economy and CO2. Actually, no competitor, BMW—no competitor can match what we have announced here today. From the 104 gram C30, these are already 10% better than the car we showed in Paris. Even to an F80, it’s less than 160 gram, it’s just spectacular.
Host: And at Volvo cars, great efforts are being made for the development of low-energy consumption vehicles. The goal is to be the best in respect to classes when it comes to CO2 emissions.
Stephen Odell: Well we've got a great plan and this is a part of the plan to meet the 2012 EU legislation of 140 grams per kilometer. So we’re in good shape to deliver that. Of course we are working on it and these vehicles are very important to that. Of course flexible fuel is as well and you know it’s somewhat peculiar to Sweden because the capacity and the filling distribution capability isn't in other markets. I'm constantly asked about natural gas and we’re looking at that but the volumes aren’t huge. The volumes are probably around $4,000.00 to $5,000.00 a year. We can find a business sense way of doing that at the right cost and we’ll happily do it.
Host: At this point in time here in Geneva, it’s very much a question of the future of the car industry and what cars of the future will look like. Steven Odell has clear visions of how tomorrow’s Volvo cars should be designed.
Stephen Odell: It cannot just save your way into profit. Of course we’re going to have to drive cost there but we must continue to develop great products like these drive E products here, like the S60 and the V60 that we’re going to build and launch next year. We’ve got to keep our products going forward and we have.
