Discover Veli Losinj on Losinj Island in Croatia
The 405 sq/km crest is the largest island along with crock. Its cost line is 250 km long and its highest mountain is 650 m tall. A scientist born is Losinj, Ambrose Harchich opened the first meteorological monitoring station and set up the tourist office. At the end of the 1800’s the professor and his colleagues started to landscape the island, the first hotel are assume built, the Park Hotel and the Alhambra.
Fishing place an important role in the economical life of the island, the lively colorful fish markets attracts many tourist but don’t forget the sun ripen vegetable and fruits a part of which are grown on the island. The colorful salads of local restaurants are made from these which is serve with grilled fish.
Todis and Losinj were already populated places in the Neolithic Period, proven by Punta Crestar Cave of Cut slash and Velis’ Yama Cave in Losinj. The first settlements on the island were established by the Illyrian Devon Ethnic group. They built the first stone houses and harpers.
In the first century before Christ the Roman Empire extended its power over the entire region of the Mediterranean Sea and settled here for centuries. Then Visantium took control over most of the seashore and the islands. Croatian settled here during the great migration in the seventh century.
300 years later Venus gained power over Trest and Losinj. Todis paid 40 martin first toVenus as tax. Martin means Kuna in Croatian which is the Origin of the name of today’s Croatian currency. On the island of Trest in the city of Osor a small bronze statue representing a martin was erected in memory of these. From the 11th century the Croatians the Hungarian King and later Austria and Napoleon ruled here. In 1920 Trest and Losinj were a part of Italy return into Croatia only in 1945.
The island of Adriatic doesn’t abundant fresh water. Trest is very lucky in this respect, 50 fresh water springs and 70 natural reservoirs can be found on its territory as well as the famous Lake Ferana. This is some of the clearest water in Europe coming from under Ground Rivers running 68 m under the sea bed. The lake supplies the islanders with drinking water and it’s therefore strictly protected. Many protected species live in the vicinity. Trest is famous for the 25 reptile species especially the native spotted nude. Other rare protected animals also live here such as the quarter mole fought to of gone extinct or the griffin vulture. Adriatic dolphins can also be seen here most frequently.
The constant presence of the colony numbering around 150 is the best proof of water quality since these animals are extremely sensitive to any contamination in there habitat. As for the flora it’s also surprising. Expensive truffles can also be found here that are hunted by pigs just like in France.
Native orchids are hard to find as they flourish well in this environment. The oldest oak of Croatia is also to be found here, the age which is estimated at a thousand years by some experts. Otherwise five kinds of oaks live here and holly is also native after which Hollywood got its name but today it’s not so common in North America.
The birds of the Eastern Coast of the island are protected by step rocks and nature conservation lawns. The relief of the island didn’t make it possible to build large ports and beaches here. That’s why such sea birds can live here in undisturbed piece, which is been distracted in other places by encroaching civilization.
