Julie: The state of Rajasthan is dissected by what may be the oldest existing mountain range in the world, the Aravalli. These mountains were once covered by dense forest which were protected hunting preserves of the maharajas. Today, due to population growth and the ever increasing demand for firewood, the forest are being depleted.
Female: We’re entering the Kumbalgarh gardens sanctuary here. Sometimes you’ll see the endangered species of wolf.
Male: The Kumbalgarh wildlife sanctuary is one of the few reserves that can be visited on horseback. It is best known for its packs of wolves, but it’s also home to monkeys, leopards, and wild boars.
Julie: As we emerge from the forest, we saw ancient walls looming above us. The Kumbalgarh fort was one of the most citadels of the Mewar kingdom. This is where the rulers of Mewar took refuge in times of danger.
The place was so quiet and deserted, we can almost sense the presence of ghost of ancient battles.
Male: The fort compound covers 36 kilometers and includes palaces, gardens, and temples. As well as water storage facilities. Because of its isolated location atop the Aravalli range, the fort was only conquered once in its history.
Julie: After our journey through the rustic countryside, we were face with one of those contrast that India is famous for. The romantic city of Udaipur, set among rolling hills and tranquil lakes is filled with dazzling palaces.
Minul: Udaipur is a special city because it’s very rich in its culture, its heritage. And there's so much of influence of royalty. Everything is so beautiful, it’s just like it was eras back. And of course we have Lake Palace which lies in the middle of the water like a pearl drop from the sky.
Male: From a dock in the city palace, small boats take visitors across the water to the Lake Palace, said to be one of the most luxurious hotels in the world today.
Many of the magnificent forts and palaces built by the Rajputs are still owned by the maharajas and their families. In 1971, Indira Gandhi, discontinued financial support of the Rajput princes, because to this, many have converted their family palaces into hotels. The income allows them to maintain their historic treasures. Though they’ve lost the royal status, many still feel a responsibility to their people.
Maharana: It is a responsibility that one assumes to one’s self. One cannot write off the bond that one has to the people just overnight or a stroke of a pen or amendment of constitution. My father was a king and I'm most extremely king and that bond should remain. And in order for it to remain, one has to work at it. You can't take it for granted.
Our activities revolves around primarily education to both men and women. We have always felt that education is the great need to the country. And once people are educated, they would be able to tackle their problems a lot better. Similarly, we are trying to keep up the religious function as much as we possibly can. And we revived a lot of those, because I think it’s very necessary for the modern generation to have some idea of the heritage and some idea of their culture.
Julie: With his children getting their college education in the far corners of the world, the maharana express his hopes that they too will share their ancestor’s dedication to preserving the dignity of their heritage.
