One of the peaks of the mountains rising above Paleokastrica was named not by accident, Bella Vista or beautiful view. The view opening up from the terrace of the café is one of the most fantastic panoramas even on a world scale. The two bays are separated by a narrow promontory. Their cliffs are covered with rich vegetation. It’s worth getting a closer view of the reefs and cliffs shooting out of the sea by boat or paddleboat. Several smaller rock cavities were formed here.
Many caves can be found in the cliffs. The light reflecting from the bottom of these caves and passing through the water creates unlikely shades of blue and green. Local boatmen will gladly show these places which remind us of the famous blue cave of Capri.
Paleokastrica is the place where according to Homer, Odysseus and Nausicaa met. The Panagia Monastery has been standing on one of the peninsulas dividing the coast land since 1228. Its current shape was created in the 18th century. Several dozen monks used to live here. Today, it’s a museum exhibiting authentic articles of personal use as well as a valuable icon collection. From the terrace of the monastery, the view of the 18th century citadel, Angalo Castra is beautiful.
