The Belgians call Oostende the queen of the seas. First 150 years ago during the reign of King Leopold I then later under Leopold II, it was one of the most popular holiday resorts in Europe. It was a meeting place of kings, dignitaries, artists, diplomats and wealthy members of the upper class. The world famous Corozal was also built at that time and enjoyed great popularity among the high society up until World War II. Today, a huge casino stands in its place with a concert hall of 2500 seats. The art deco building of the Palaise de – spa hotel is a more historic structure. The town pier and the restored summer residence of the king are worth a visit too. The modern apartment blocks provide a completely natural backdrop to the boardwalk. There are many cafés, beach wear, sportswear and gift shops on the street front bottom floor of the buildings just like in any cosmopolitan resort in the world. As a stark contrast to this, the white clapboard changing cubicles create a nostalgic mood.
