Visit the Island of Ibiza in Spain

Ibiza was named the Isle of Pines by the Greeks and the Roman age it was called Eivissa. It’s the island of peace and evergreens where we may find tranquility in the hot tropical sunshine. Ibiza is only a 572 square kilometer little spot on the map but it’s an exceptional place for relaxation and recreation. The salty vapor of the sea mingles wonderfully with the scent of pines, olives, almonds and figs. The coast to the island is 170 meters long and its abundant scenarios still untouched by human hand.

Seventeen protected natural habitats are registered. The total area of which exceeds 40% of the area of the island. Due to its balanced climate and favorable location Ibiza became a significant resort centered at the Mediterranean. Ibiza is the capital of the island situated in the southeast with a population of 32,000. Its location and monument buildings make it one of the most intimate towns of the Mediterranean.

From the large part, ships head towards the main land and the other island of Balear, Majorca, Formentera and Menorca. The town can be divided into two areas the lower town which consists of the fort La Marina and the scenic Sa Peña and the upper town which is called the Dalt Vila. The Passeig Vara de Rey is the heart of the town. It’s got its name after the general who died of murder in the Spanish American war for the independence of Cuba. The general also got a monument in 1904.

Two famous sites of the town are the dry well decorated by five rolled iron lamps and the herbalist of the pirates. We know that this is the only monument in the world that was put up to pirates. But what ethics had done to earn this honor. The Sa Peña is the controversial part of the town. It is scenic but very poor. The whitewashed houses, the angled stairs or the narrow streets inspire photographers and painters. Almost all houses have something interesting to show.

Many fishermen still lived here with their families. The clothes drying on ropes, children playing on the cobblestones, careless cats sunbathing lend the true beach atmosphere of the town of Sa Peña, not to mention the scent of the fish and the meal and the making in kitchens. The gate of the upper town Dalt Vila was built in 1583 under the rule of Philip II.

There's now a bridge built of stone where there used to be a draw bridge. This part of town surrounded by a 22 meter high stone wall is connected to the lower part of the town by three passageways. The stiff and narrow cobblestone alleys had wrought times gone by. Along the castle wall stiff stairs lead up to the towers in the castle from where we make lands down of the town lying below and the crystal clean sea. On the other side of the tower there's a line of picturesque white houses. The church built of yellow sun warm stones has been looking over the town of Dalt Vila for centuries.

The slides of the Agua Mar Park offered good amusements for both children and adults.

We continue our journey on the Southern Coast of the town the famous Playa d'en Bossa promenade surrounded by a palm trees with an abundance of shops and restaurants which will keep the visitor entertained. This shallow water beach covered by foreign sand is the largest on the island. It’s several kilometers long.

The open market of Hippie is held on every Wednesday on the area of Punta Arabi which is to the north of Santa Eulalia. In the 60’s the islands or creek in Ibiza were a refuge for the hippies longing for freedom. Some of the settled in these places permanently. These hippies who may have grown somewhat older, but not more serious sell their handmade souvenir products on this market. But those visitors who remember life in the 60’s, his experience is lifetime travel.

The beautiful bay of Cala d’en Serra can be found three kilometers from Portinatx. It is abundant and both rocky and sandy beaches, the rocky part of many surprises and star for divers, fishers and hikers. There are many small bays hidden among the cliffs of the coasts. The famous bays and beaches of the island can be found to the south of San Antonio.

Enthusiastic people may argue whether the Bassa, Comte or the Vedella bay is the best on the island. The truth is that all of them have something special to offer. The lengthy Cala Bassa is one of the most popular with its shallow sandy beach. Cala Comte with gravel and sand with its shallow water is very popular with small children. Some tourists with artistic aspirations carve and pose man sit to the stiff sandy wall of the bay, which evoked the portraits of American presidents in Mount Rushmore.

On Ibiza the day and the night are both unforgettable. While the sun is shining the sea and the pools attract people. When night falls, the restaurants, the world famous pleasure grounds, the discos are crowded with young people and with people who have liked to feel young. There are separate disco buses so that nobody would miss the enjoyment offered by the night life. There are no closing hours and it’s impossible to feel bored.
