KUTV reports... “The Granite School District says the boy has been charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon on school property... as well as three counts of aggravated assault.” The 11-year old has not been identified, but police say he did give a reason for bringing the gun to school: protection, in case there was an incident like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The boy was taken to the principals office after two students told a teacher he had the gun.  Although police have not confirmed this, it has also been reported that he pointed the guns at some student’s. KIDK spoke to a 6th grader who said her life was threatened. 6th grade classmate: “He pointed a gun to my head and said he was going to kill me.” Mother: “He told other students that his parents gave it to him for protection because of what happened in Connecticut.” There are conflicting reports on where the student got the handgun from; whether his parents gave it to him or he took it from a relative who left it at his house. The boy did have both the gun and ammunition in his backpack, though ABC4 reports they probably didn’t go together. “Officials said the boy’s gun was not loaded and the ammunition he had likely did not fit the firearm. They would not say who provided the gun to the boy.” Some parents are pretty upset no one noticed the gun until about 45 minutes before school got out and the school didn’t even go on lockdown. But according to the Granite School District Spokesman, once a teacher did find out about the gun, police responded very quickly. "Once the teacher knew there was a weapon in the classroom, the student was apprehended in 30 to 45 seconds and immediately brought down to the office and the police were on site within 5 to 10 minutes." Police are investigating the parents’ involvement in the incident and the boy was taken to juvenile hall. He has also been suspended.
