Talks between the U.S. and North Korea stopped when North Korea’s Kim Jong-ll died two months ago. But those talks resumed Thursday in Beijing. U.S. envoy Glyn Davies says...

 

“The talks today were substantive and serious and we covered quite a number of issues...”

 

Davies would not provide many details but did say nutritional aid was discussed. This time North Korea took the initiative to go back to table. Davies said he hoped the talks would lead North Korea into the next phase, which will be six-party talks. An analyst told Fox News the renewed dialogue is meaningful.



 


“it looks like that is going to move forward and we will get progress here, and I think that's a good sign. It doesn't mean everything is wine and roses but that's a step in the right direction.”

 

 


But some analysts think it’s just the beginning of another round of tug-of-war. The Christian Science Monitor ’s Donald Kirk says...

 

 

 

“North Korea wants to get the dialogue moving again in order to secure the food that it desperately needs as its stocks run low during the long, harsh winter months. The U.S. has the opportunity to push North Korea toward giving up its nuclear program by holding out on food aid until it sees progress.”

 

 

 

Although North Korea’s gesture may be out of desperation, a Wall Street Journal article points out some analysts still see it as a chance to peek into one of the most mysterious countries in the world.


 


“The issue of food aid could be a chance to compare the earlier regime of Kim Jong Il and the current regime of Kim Jong Eun, and as a way to gauge whether the younger Mr. Kim has consolidated enough political power to move forward on negotiations with Washington.”
 

 

 

A Harvard researcher told Bloomberg the talks also help keep the peace on the Korean peninsula.
 



“This is an effective means by which the U.S. side can hopefully prevent future provocations by North Korea against South Korea.”

 

 

 

However, an Asian study expert told RT the U.S. actually has no real intention to bring peace to this area.

 

 

 

“They want the tension on the Korean peninsula to continue as part of their strategy to contain China... What is clear now is that the Americans don’t want to go back to six-party talks because it puts China in the driver’s seat.”

 

 

 

Time reports North Korea’s state media is already criticizing next month’s Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, calling it “illogical.” The U.S. and North Korea will meet again on Friday.
