Audra: We’ve almost made into the summer but you still probably need a light jacket for the cooler days and the cooler nights. So, Rhiannon shows us one coat that’s actually been around for decades but at recently got an update.
Rhiannon: One look that never goes out of style is the trench coat. We went shopping with image consultant Claudette Fried at Lord & Taylor to see the hot looks for spring.
Forget the basics, this year trench coats are going bold and beautiful. So Claudette, you have Kirsten in this beautiful yellow coat that looks fabulous on her.
Claudette: Yeah, for this season and also the new trends for the trench coats are to wear a little bit more color but the other thing toward the fabrics, you know they’re just a little bit lighter. They’re different than the old trench coats. They’ve got a little bit different feel to them. I also like doing something such as just rolling it up and giving a little bit over your arm you know, having that show because it's again, a little bit sexier.
Absolutely! And the length of this, I don’t know if you noticed but it's on the shorter side. But this season, you can go with the length this short or you can take it down a little bit more or you can do the one that’s right above the knee but, it's all about color. If you want a really break it out, just bring a little bit more color into your wardrobe.
Rhiannon: I love this one.
Claudette: I know. This is a beautiful color also.
Rhiannon: Claudette says that one reason that trench never goes out of style. It looks good on every one.
Our intern Kirsten can pull off any color but Claudette says, “Chose a color that makes you feel great”. And if you don’t want to buy a new trench coat, update the one you have.
Claudette: Well, if we got the long one at home.
Rhiannon: A lot of people do. I know. I have longer one at home.
Claudette: This is your long one. If you want to bring this one, current, take it to a tailor and have them just shorten it. Do between halfway between your knee and your thigh. So, shorten it at about around two or three inches above your knee.
Rhiannon: Claudette says, “You can also have the tailor take it in a bit to give it a more fitted look.”
Claudette: Another way to just change your trench is, take the belt off. And just put a belt on top of it. You know, a regular belt, a back one or a brown one but something that’s going to take this trench now make it look a little bit like a blazer so that you can wear it to the office or you can wear it differently than just doing a trench coat.
Rhiannon: Wow! Trench coats are so universal. Who knew? How do you feel? Do you like it?
Kirsten: I love it. This is green. This is a fun color for spring.
Rhiannon: Even with new links, colors and fabrics, the trench is a classic look that never gets old. For Better, I'm Rhiannon.
Audra: Thanks a lot Rhiannon. And Claudette Fried has been on Oprah and has worked as a stylist for Gayle King for years. We’ll be right back. .
