A propagator is ideal for germinating seeds. Seeds hunks are discarded easily owing to the humidity inside the lid. Keep small plants inside in a sunny position until all frost is passed. It’s best not to over water or feed at his stage.
The compost contains all the nutrients the plants need. A good root system is developed by quality compost, water and air. Over watering stunts root growth. Here's a strong healthy root system. Give plants a good watering then allow compost to almost dry out, this lets air back into the soil.
Organic seaweed extract is helpful in promoting healthy growth. This is the only feed I give to young plants.
New compost is always best for getting seeds and seedlings off to a good start!
Perlite added to compost is useful for root development. It helps retain moisture and air. Before transplanting allow compost to almost dry out. If it’s wet, it’s also heavy and may break some of the roots.
Hold seedlings by their seed leaves. Transplant so that the seed leaves are just above soil level. Water pots from below; sit them in a tray or saucer. Feed plants with tomato feed when they begin to fruit.
When all danger of frost has passed, plants can be left out overnight. Garden fleece adds protection. If heavy rain is forecast, use any method possible to keep leaves dry. A greenhouse early in the season makes things easier.
Pepolino are small but very tasty plum shaped tomatoes. Brandywine is a large and very tasty variety. Perfect with a lump of cheese.
