The Top 10 Mistakes in Kitchen Design
Hello and thank you for watching our brief video on the Top 10 Mistakes in Kitchen Design: How to Avoid Them brought to you by Dallas.KitchenRemodelCompany.com.
Mistake number 10, making room to work, planning your counter space. One of the biggest complaints about kitchen design is the lack of countertops. You want your countertops to be decorative but they also have to be functional. When remodeling your kitchen, make sure you that you have more than enough countertop workspace by evaluating how you use your countertops now. What you don’t like about that and then planning for your future needs. Understanding how traffic flow will flow through the kitchen as a useful tool in organizing countertop space so that it will be efficient and comfortable. Plan for appliances that will be on the countertops such as openers, blenders, mixtures and many other ones.
Number nine is the golden triangle, the key to a good layout. Putting refrigerators, stove and sink close together makes cooking and cleaning much easier. There should be unobstructed access to and from all three of these locations. Narrow aisles, inconvenient door swings and island cut offs; islands that cut off direct access to these key areas make kitchens less efficient and less convenient. Another consideration is the communications area, if you’re going to have a desk, table or counter where you have a phone, writing material and possibly even a computer or cookbooks.
Number eight is room for storage. Kitchens typically contain a lot of stuff. Not only that but items often concealed behind built-in cabinet doors can be oddly shaped that use up lot of space. Kitchen storage is a prime real estate. Don’t fall for the temptation to place too much of your budget into visually appealing items like flooring or countertops and cut corners with your storage. The work-a-day life of a kitchen includes a lot of tools that contribute to preparing and serving meals. A big part of the enjoyment of your kitchen will be how accessible these labor saving items are.
Island design, an island can add some much needed counter space but if it’s too big, it can look silly and just ruin your kitchen. Make sure that you plan for features that you want in the island. Don’t forget to plan and budget for electrical and plumbing if you plan on having a sink or electrical appliances on the island. Be careful to plan for traffic flow properly as well. Make sure you’ll leave at least 48-inches of open space around the island to allow for that traffic flow. If you have a breakfast bar, be sure to allow for 24-inches from side to side and at least 12-inches deep for each person so that they’re not bumping elbows while they’re at their a meal.
At number six is the light it up. You will need three types of lighting; general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Decide on the layout of your kitchen and where the workstations will be. This is where you’re going to put your task lighting which keeps that area bright and easy to see in. Good general lighting can be achieved using fluorescent or recessed lighting or perhaps even strip track lighting. Accent lighting shows off the features when the kitchen is not in use in areas such as under the countertops and under the upper cabinets, it will give a light glow and a very nice look when the party is moved into the next room.
