Homs, just north of Damascus, lies on a vital road linking army bases on the Mediterranean coast to government forces in Damascus. It is now a major battleground in the two-year-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, where a turn in the wrong direction can cost you your life. Once sacred places are now haunted by a war that has cost more than 70,000 lives and pushed at least one million people into exile.
