The Lewis and Clark Expedition Part 10/12
As the first Americans to cross the continental divide it soon became apparent to the expedition that the hope for a northwest water route was a false wood. Jefferson had believed that the explorers after living the Missouri would encounter only a small mountain range and then a river to the Pacific Ocean. In fact the party had to make its way west across the vast bitter root mountains already covered with snow in September.
The grilling passage would be the most exhaust and devastating segment of the entire journey. By the 11th day the men were on the brink of starvation and the only hope for survival was for Clark to push ahead with a small party for food.
