The Importance of Family Support for Multiple Sclerosis - Kelly's Story

I am so fortunate and I feel so blessed to have such an incredible support group.
I have an amazing husband who, thankfully, is able to really fill in for so many of the things that I can’t do, like driving.
I am not driving very much these days because of my vision. So he is really taking on a huge caregiver role in that regard, picking my daughter up. I have a 13-year-old daughter.
I also have this incredible family – my parents, my mother and father live not too far from me.
I have two sisters and a brother and I have a mother-in-law, everybody is here in Arizona and again, not too far from me, so I feel very fortunate that I have that.
And I rely so heavily on people again, to take a huge portion of my load off my back, picking up my daughter, taking her from school to swim practice or to Girl Scouts or wherever she needs to go.
I do a lot of consolidating with time. If we are heading out somewhere then I always say, “Oh can we run by the store, I need to pick up food for dinner,” and just everything.
You have to get more organized, which is really a challenge for me because I am not very organized, and so you have to really concentrate on taking advantage of the people in my life who are helping out and maybe coming to pick me up and taking me to a doctor’s appointment.
Okay, on the way home I also need to run by this store and that store and really consolidate lots of stuff. Again, very fortunate to have this amazing support system that I have.
