VIDEO DESCRIPTION:

In the 16th century, the pope ruled over a vast area of Italy called the Papal States. Most of the territory of the Papal States, that had previously encompassed much of central Italy, was absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. The modern State of Vatican City, an enclave within Italy's national capital, Rome, is part of the Mons Vaticanus, and of the adjacent former Vatican Fields.
