The 2008 Golden Steering Wheel award ceremony in Berlin, BMW also took home a prize. First place for it's 1 Series in the special class of Coupes. It's called Special class and it's not the jury but the AutoBild magazine readers were the ones to make the decisions.
They voted in different ways, on the Internet, by phone, text messaging and by post card. The 1 Series was victorious in the contest against rivals like the VW Scirocco, and the lifestyle Coupe from Mercedes, the CLC.
The BMW only beat the Scirocco by a small margin but still with the highest number of points from the readers, meaning the customers. That's a very special kind of success. BMW Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer somehow had a gut feeling about winning.
In the back of my mind, we somehow felt this victory coming, but you never know for sure. But did the car earn the award? 100%.
Based on the slogan, 'Beauty Wins', the 1 Series BMW captured the Readers' Prize with its long front section short tail end and striking side profile, the exterior design makes the compact Coupe from Munich both unmistakable and popular. It's the only car in it's field of contestant for the Golden Steering Wheel with the rear wheel drive.
BMW is both proud and confident.
The prize means a lot to us since the BMW 1 Series shares the same dimensions with the BMW 2002. That really reminds us of a great success, the BMW 2002. And if I take a look, the sales figures for the 1 Series Coupe, it will go on with this success.
BMW has been making an all out effort to make it's cars different from the rest. And the Golden Steering Wheel Readers Choice contest has shown that only those cars that hit it off well the general public will have big chances on the market. First, it's time to celebrate here in Berlin at the Golden Steering Wheel, and also in Munich at BMW headquarters where the experts will certainly be working on future models and maybe produce another prize winner real soon.
