Bennett-Watt: One the out spurts of Springfield, New England’s largest fair, the Big E.
Wayne McCary: Well, the Big E is one of the top and largest fairs in North America. And what’s really unique about this place is that it’s the only fair in the country when more than one state participates. Here, we’re fortunate to have all six in New England states and they represent it on something we call the Avenue State and each one of the New England states have a full scale replica of the original capital buildings of the states and of course in those buildings they showcase the tourism, agriculture and some of the products of the various states. You can legally claim to have been in the six New England States because again it’s the only place I know where a state actually owns property outside of its own border. So, if you visit the six buildings at the end of the day, in one spot you can say I’ve been to all six in New England states today at one time in one place.
But few years ago, we decided to have a Band Organ are built typically for the exposition of—this is a very large one. It’s one of the largest one build in the last 20 years in the United States. I’m very proud of it and it represents probably a dying art in—the Big E was founded actually back in 1916 so it’s been around for few years and it was founded originally as a livestock show that was moved here from Chicago. Then across over the years, the fair has evolved from that livestock show into a full pledged exposition. Livestock is still surprisingly very important here in Massachusetts. And we have one of the biggest livestock shows in the northeast United States. And many people come here for the food. There’s everything from the Big E Cream Puffs, the fried macaroni.
It’s certainly about the Circus. The Big E has a tradition of producing its own European style circus in each year. I travel the country and just select individual act that represent the countries from all over the world and it’s one of our most popular traditions here.
Bennett-Watt: There is extraordinary history coursing through the veins of Massachusetts, unrivaled scenic beauty populated with the kind and generous people that joined this great nation in pursuit of liberty, freedom and justice for all. Thanks for watching Discoveries America, Massachusetts.
