Why the need for another interview? Is it just a stab at gaining more publicity? Or is Te’o dead-set on clearing his name? USA Today reports Te’o’s parents will also appear in the taped interview “because they, not just their son, were taken in by his fake girlfriend” and the family “wants to show how the scandal has hurt them … and to talk publicly about the scam so that it doesn’t happen to other people.” So the difference between Te’o’s chat with Couric and sit-down with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap is simply two-fold: on vs. off-camera, and the presence of the parents...right? Think again. NBC Sports ’ Mike Florio says while the general content of the two is similar, the interviews are being sold differently. “Schaap … opened by vouching for [Te’o]’s credibility. Eventually, Schaap got around to the fact that Te’o lied to his father about meeting his fake dead girlfriend. In contrast, the primary takeaway of Couric’s Te’o interview … was that Te’o lied.” The other constant question surrounding all of the Te’o talk is: who knew what, when? And on that end, Te’o hasn’t exactly kept his account of the tall tale consistent across the two interviews.. Last week Te’o told Schaap he didn’t believe Kekua was a fake until Ronaiah Tuiasosopo contacted him to confess and apologize when news of the hoax leaked out. (Via ESPN ) But in his account to Couric, Te’o said he started to believe something was up in early December , when a girl who claimed to be his girlfriend called to say she was, in fact, alive. (Via WCPO ) Te’o told Couric he stuck to the script of his very-dreamy girlfriend’s death after he knew she did not exist because he really didn’t have any better options. “I get a phone call on December 6th saying that she’s alive, and then I’m going to be put on national T.V. two days later, and they’ll ask me about the same question? You know, what would you do?”  (Via Fox Business ) As for whether or not he was in on it, Te’o maintains in both interviews that he had no part in creating the hoax. And according to the New York Daily News - he is hoping a receipt from a flower arrangement he sent to his girlfriend’s funeral proves he was a victim , and not a proactive part in creating her.
