Hello, I'm Jeremy from TurboTax with some important information for students and parents who can claim students as dependents. Did you attend school this year? If so, you should know about the potential Federal tax savings an American opportunity tax credit can provide you with when you file your tax return. This tax credit has the highest level of tax savings than all other education credits since you can reduce your tax bill this year on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $2,500 for the expenses you pay such as tuition and books. But there are some requirements you must satisfy before you can take the credit. First, the credit is only available to students who register at least half time at their school. If you're unsure whether you satisfy this requirement, you should contact your school to find out if they've considered you a half time student for at least one semester during the tax year. The deduction is also available for parents who claim an exemption for their dependent, who is also a student. You must also be working toward an undergraduate degree or other qualified credential to claim the credit and even if you are studying towards an undergraduate degree, the credit is only available for the first four years of study. The best part about the American opportunity credit is that up to 40 percent of it is refundable. This means that if you qualify for $2,500 but only owe $1,500 in Federal income tax, the IRS will send you a refund check for $1,000. This credit is currently set to expire after the 2012 tax year unless Congress acts to extend it at that time. For more tax tips and guidance, visit TurboTax.com.
