There’s another sign the United Nations’ hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian crisis have failed. CNN has the headline .

“Former U.N. Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has quit his post as special envoy to Syria. A peace plan that Annan had worked out with both sides has been almost totally ignored.”

Annan’s attempt at a resolution reached out to Syria’s allies. But Sky News says the special envoy ran into a dead-end there, too .

“He has been doing his level best to try to get both Russia and China to agree to U.N. resolutions, but it would appear to no avail.”

The peace plan, it seemed, put even more people in danger at times. The Telegraph explains .

“A UN mission sent to Syria to monitor the supposed ceasefire was attacked several times, forcing it to withdraw most of its observers for their own safety.”


According to the BBC , advisers to the accomplished diplomat say the move is partially about saving face.

“Sources close to him have feared his legacy might be at risk by continuing this role and that it was perhaps time for him to confront reality and step down from his position.”

RT reports the U.N. and the Arab League are negotiating on Annan’s successor.
