Swamp Gravy - Georgia's Folk Life Play in Colquitt
Male: Here too an old cotton warehouse has been turn into a theater and museum.
Colquitt is a home of swamp gravy, Georgia’s Folk Life Play. Colquitt only has a population of 2,000 and when you consider about a 100 volunteers perform in the show and another 100 or so are involved in various aspects have in, that’s 10% of the town.
Charlotte Faircloth Phillips: Colquitt was dying and we wanted to find a way to save our town, Swamp Gravy is one of the ways that we wanted to save our town where art has always survived it, they survived the depression so we thought the creating art and often people are in art. That would be a good play to bring tourist in to our community.
But we haven’t off over 13% of our population and our project and in the process of Swamp Gravy which was our original goal so we get involve more than at actually so our community is very small we have 600 people in the town and 22,000 in the city. And so that’s how a big thing to have some people involved.
Swamp Gravy is Georgia’s Official Folk life how I Swamp Gravy it was name after a dish. That you cook in the crank bank to feed the multitudes when we don’t catching a fish. So, but the premise of Swamp Gravy is that you go out in the community and you gather what you have and you like something wonderful out of it.
And so that’s what we did, we run out in the community and gather our stories and gathered people who like to tell a stories, people who like to perform stories, singing, dance, push a wheel barrow, push a broom, anything, any talent that’s someone wanted to be tribute. And we put it all together in a bright big pot and stir it out and that’s what is Gravy is. It’s a telling of stories and the bowl of dining of peoples live at the tunnel of those stories and the people who gather stories which I’m a story gatherer also and I’m the teller and so. Thing I want to listen up, people their stories and let them know how important their stories are just one of the interpret part of what is wrong about he is.
Anyone who wants to be in Swamp Gravy can be in a Swamp Gravy, you just have to pass the narrow test and I guessed you know what that is. Just hold the mirror in front of your face and breath and if it fogs up you’re in.
