The second program that I’d like to introduce to you is called StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is a Tool bar based software for Internet Explorer or Firefox that tailors a random Web browsing experience to suit your interest. as with Zotero, you will need to install StumbleUpon into your browser by visiting www.stumbleupon.com. That is s, t, u, m, b, l, e, u, p, o, n .com.
There are a lot of information on the web page, so I will just point out the Start here button, located in the upper right hand corner of the Browser. If you click this, you will see that it allows you to join, download and install StumbleUpon software onto your Web Browser.
Once you have installed StumbleUpon into your Web Browser, you should notice icons in your Tool bar and an icon in your lower Tool bar. The icon in the lower Tool bar, when you click it, it will make the upper Tool bar disappear and reappear again. The same thing can be accomplished in Internet Explorer at least by right clicking on the Tool bar and clicking the StumbleUpon Tool bar options. But for this tutorials purposes, I will leave it up, so that you can see all the buttons that we’ll be using.
The first button you should be aware of is the Stumble button itself. Now when you first install stumble and you click on this, it will prompt you with the number of check boxes that you can select to determine your interest. After that, when you click the Stumble button like so, it will come up with a random web page based on the interest that you input along with any websites that you’ve liked to disliked.
If a webpage is a particular interest to you, you can click the I like it button, like so or you can change your response and always unclick that and hit the I just like it button.
This will further narrow your Stumble searches in the future as StumbleUpon analyzes the topics that you like and dislike the most. Also, the Stumble that you come across will be partially based on what other users have liked and disliked the most.
You can also send this page to friends using e-mails. Or see any reviews that the page may have gotten from StumbleUpon and of course you can always add a review yourself.
You can also a do a more narrow search by clicking on this globe button here, which shows a page where many of the selected topics that you have chosen.
If you have any friend on StumbleUpon, you can have StumbleUpon show you a page that your friend liked.
You can have StumbleUpon search the web for an image based on your interests.
You can have StumbleUpon show you a video.
You can Stumble through specific sites.
You can have Stumble show you a new item and of course a list of various other options are available.
If you visit your favorites, there are couple of features to know.
At your Home tab, you can post a blog and it also shows you any of the pages that you would like.
Also you can access friends in inbox and your preferences.
After StumbleUpon is installed. I recommend going into preferences, setting up a profile and adding in Avatar, like so.
StumbleUpon has other tabs along the top of the page linking to different topics that may interest you, such as news, photos, videos, arts etc.
Lastly, if you are not Stumbling but you happen to find a website that you like anyway, you can always add it to the StumbleUpon Archive by clicking on the I like it button. If this page has not been found before, it will prompt you with a, You discovered a new site window. It will ask you for some information. It will ask you to review the site as well.
After you fill in the information, click on the Submit this site and it will be added to the StumbleUpon Archive.
Let us recap on what I have gone over. Zotero is a Firefox extension that allows you to easily store source and information in your Mozilla Web Browser as a search over database. Along with other functions, you can create bibliographies, edit, take web snapshots, attach files, etc.
Also note that Zotereo works with Portal Firefox, making it easy to install on a Flash Drive and bring with you anywhere you need to go. So you always have your library available. StumbleUpon is an Internet Browser Tool bar that works with Internet Explorer or Firefox.
StumbleUpon allow you to randomly search the web based on the interest that you input into your StumbleUpon Account.
Also, StumbleUpon allows you to rate any site that you visit as well as allows you to message and keep in contact with friends and post a blog and also keeps track of any websites that you have enjoyed and uses them to better determine which random sites you should visit.
