An old study on the green vegetable’s merits as a hangover remedy is getting some new fame — and just in time for January 1, which is National Hangover Day. According to Medical News Today , a research team from the Institute of Medical Science and Jeju National University in Korea found that “asparagus extract contains amino acids and minerals that may cure an alcohol hangover and help keep liver cells safe from toxins.” But before scarfing asparagus spears to eliminate your post-celebration hangover, consider eating the part that gets very little attention — the leaves. B.Y. Kim, a lead researcher for the study, said in a press release “The amino acid and mineral contents were found to be much higher in the leaves than the shoots.” As WebMD points out curing headaches isn’t the only thing asparagus is good for. The website says the green veggie is high in folate... potassium... and vitamin B12. Not to mention it’s reputed as an aphrodisiac. A writer for HLN says asparagus joins the ranks of other foods known to cure hangovers, like eggs and bananas. Still, several sources agree that eating before consuming alcohol, drinking water, getting plenty of rest and of course not drinking as much are all surefire ways to prevent dreaded hangovers.
