WDAF has the details. “Sapporo Medical University in Japan found a chemical in beer that can actually fight off pneumonia and bronchitis... Scientists plan to use the chemical in future treatments.” Don’t recognize it? A chemistry class as opposed to a power hour would help. Here’s the structure of chemical humulone , better known as that bitter taste found in mature hops. The Japan Daily Press reports Sapporo Breweries funded the study to make it come to fruition. So technically, a study funded by a beer company says beer is good for you. According to the study, humulone can protect against the respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. But before you’re abuzz with this latest remedy, there are a few caveats. As the CDC explains... ...the virus is a common cause of bronchitis and affects the lungs and breathing passages of — wait for it — infants . The CDC says most humans can recover in a week’s time, but RSV can be particularly severe for infants and young children. So, maybe boozey baby bottles are out of the question, but healthy adults are in the clear to administer this happy hour-styled treatment, right? Well, yes... but only small amounts of humulone are found in most beers. Medical Daily notes “...to get any real benefits of the compound, a person will have to drink 30 cans, each of 350 milliliters (12 oz) of beer.” A researcher with the study said Sapporo Medical University is looking into ways to apply humulone to non-alcoholic products and foods.
