Rebecca Brayton: Hi, I am Rebecca Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com, and in this clips Steve Wozniak provides inside into Apple's history and some of it's recipes for success.
Can you outline the Mac vs. PC battle from the beginning?
Steve Wozniak: When IBM came out, they had sales forces in all the big business and the market for home computers really wasn't going to fit the Apple too well. The market for small business computers was much huger, so we kind of lost the business market; we lost software in some of those areas, the left brain areas accounting, law and engineering. Lot of the software's really directed towards PCs that's where it exist now. On the other hand people will go to at work and takes the work computer as a PC and at home they buy themselves a Macintosh. Last few years our market share actually in the last year or two has doubled.
Can you explain the recent success of Apple and the Mac brand?
Steve Wozniak: The popular iPod and the iPhone brought a lot of people in to Apple stores and in contact with the equipment. A lot of people talk to their friends, the experience that you get from Apple's people talk about how important it is how they love it. We've always had a very strong, strong passionate group of followers.
Why do Macs tend to appeal to certain industries?
Steve Wozniak: We could handle such things as photography with Photoshop, and videography with programs like Adobe Premiere shortly after the Avid was out. So we could do video editing and we can do photography work and graphics much earlier because we had enough memory to do it. And it's that simple and explanation short of an action with history. So all the artists, and the video people, and the producers, and the movie people all got into Macintoshes and once you are into you love it so much it's very difficult to part you away.
What is Apple's Key to being ahead in terms of innovation?
Steve Wozniak: Apple has it in the culture, company culture why couldn't, why couldn't Packard turn me down five times for the personal computer and its because their personal culture wouldn't have let them do the fund interesting inspirational machine that would change the world. They would have forced to be an engineer's machine. Apple's you know smart about knowing, you know, what's a new good direction to go, we were the first ones to built USB port into our computers, we invented FireWire, we were really the first to ever have a popular mask produced sold on Wi-Fi. Steve Jobs in particular even when you know when I was there he would always be pushing even me to try to look at this newer, smaller device can review something with that one, can we push it to what are the new technologies that are a one step ahead of the others. Lot of these things are just really trying to do a little slicker job even though it has a cost.
