SPAIN TEAM WITH TROPHY, SERBIA TEAM WITH RUNNER-UP PLATES STORY: The Spanish team of Fernando Verdasco and Isabel Medina Garrigues claimed the Hopman Trophy in Perth in the early hours of Sunday morning (January 6) by beating Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic in the mixed doubles match. Spain has now won the trophy four times; 2010, 2002 and 1990 being the previous years. The day opened with Djokovic confidently beating Verdasco 6-4 7-5 in the men's singles match. In the women's singles, Ivanovic found Garrigues a tough opponent. While the Serb had the stronger serve, Garrigues was skilled at defensive play and took the first set. Ivanovic responded by taking the second in a tie-break, but too many of her returns in the third set went out and Garrigues took the match 6-4 6-7 (3) 6-2. In the mixed doubles match Verdasco excelled, with the Spaniards taking the first set 6-4. Serbia fought back in the second set but then conceded points cheaply. The only break of that second set came in the 11th game against Ivanovic's serve, and then Garrigues was serving for the championship. Verdasco's quick return beat Djokovic, and the Spanish pair celebrated their tournament win. The champions were presented with the trophy by the widow of tournament founder Harry Hopman.
