But, SNL switched from their traditional comedic opening, to a somber tribute to remember the Sandy Hook victims. "Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright." The New York City Children’s Chorus sang their version of Silent Night, then went on to introduce the show with the traditional “Live from New York it’s Saturday Night.” After the somber opening, E! Online reports the show’s host Martin Short told the audience, "I can't tell you how humble your response makes a comedic icon like myself feel,” USA Today says “It was the night's sole reference to the tragedy and struck just the right tone.” And it’s not the first time SNL has switched things up in wake of a tragedy. SNL acted in similar good taste when its 27th season premiered 18 days after September 11. Producer Lorne Michaels asked then-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, “Can we be funny?” Aside from the opening tribute, SNL got back to its old, risque self. Martin Short hosted the show for the third time, while musical legend Paul McCartney performed with the members of Nirvana, and some foul language slipped from the lips Samuel L. Jackson.
