Not only because of its popularity but also because it’s been dubbed the “sexting app” — and frankly it’s scaring the hell out of everyone over 40. “Now to a potentially dangerous way to share photos among teens called Snapchat.” “The photo is programed to vanish after a few seconds. Supposed to..” “But is it encouraging kids to send inappropriate photos?” If the local television community doesn’t convince, the headline for CNN’s article on the matter reads... “Snapchat: Sexting Tool or the Next Instagram?” The article went on to point out... “ Technological advances and nudie shots have shared a strong, if secretive, relationship for centuries. From the printing press to pay-per-view to VCRs, new tech … has always been followed closely by folks figuring out how to...use it to get dirty. ” The problem -- the pictures that are supposed to disappear in seconds could potentially be saved forever if a screen shot is taken before the photos disappear. But as Buzzfeed points out, there is notification system in place. “If the recipient takes a screenshot of the photo, the sender is notified. Sure, it can’t stop you from screenshotting, but the notification is a pretty good deterrent.” Despite the seedy nature of the app, it’s become very popular among teens around the country, so popular that social media giant Facebook tried to revive it’s poke feature with the same idea.. Slate.com says “Facebook Poke is a blatant rip-off of Snapchat...” But according to PCWorld the “poke” app is still pretty lifeless. “Snapchat also is booming in the download department -- it’s currently the fourth most popular iPhone app in iTunes, whereas Facebook Poke barely makes the top 100.” With so much turbulence from the media over the app, the co-founder Evan Spiegal seems to think everyone isn’t giving millenials enough credit. Spiegal told Techcrunch , “I’m not convinced that the whole sexting thing is as big as the media makes it out to be … I just don’t know people who do that. It doesn’t seem that fun when you can have real sex.”
