(Image: The Stir ) BY JASMINE BAILEY Just weeks after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, an attorney has filed for permission to sue the state for $100 million on behalf of a 6-year-old student— saying the school could have done more to protect her. Here’s WVIT. “She lost a lot of friends who were killed and she really suffered through the horrors of listening to this. They didn’t protect her or them and they could have, they could have done better.” The Hartford Courant reports — the child, whose name has not been revealed, was in a classroom when she heard the confrontation over the loudspeaker. Her lawyer, Irving Pinsky said in the claim, "As a consequence, the claimant-minor child has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury, the nature and extent of which are yet to be determined.” The claim alleges that the state failed to adequately protect the young child from foreseeable harm. But a writer for The Stir points out that the child is alive and that may be due to the warning the loudspeaker provided. “I have no doubt every single person who made it out of Sandy Hook Elementary School alive was traumatized, but it was also by the grace of someone having the wits about them to turn on the loudspeaker that many lives were saved.” Other media aren’t exactly praising the lawsuit, either. A writer for Outside the Beltway railed against the family. “What, exactly, is it that this family asserts the school could have reasonably done differently? Perhaps they need to count their blessings, be glad their child is safe, and stop looking for a pot of gold...” Pinsky filed the claim with the state's claims commissioner but he must first get approval before the lawsuit can proceed.
