Melanie Raposo: Hi! Welcome to The Pregnancy Show everybody, I'm Melanie Raposo, and today I'm going to show you new moms, how to shake off some of the extra baby weight by adding a little Salsa and spice to your workout. We're going to Merengue and Cha Cha Cha with some simple and sexy Latin dance steps. And along for the ride is the cutest partner of all, your baby.
Salsa Babies is a 45 minute dance class for new moms and their babies, that teaches various Latin dances while providing a fun workout at the same time. Jennifer Torres, Founder of Salsa Babies, explains why more and more moms are getting off the treadmill and onto the dance floor instead.
Jennifer Torres: The obvious thing people are coming for is to dance, to exercise, but the added benefit so they get to spend time with their baby, so it can sometimes be hard to get out and workout. So they get to bring their baby with them. So it's nice bonding between mom and baby. It's also really great for the mum's self esteem to get moving, feel a bit sexy again, and that's basically the gist of the class.
Melanie Raposo: With the motivation of our friendly instruction along with an intoxicating beat, moms and baby are shaking their step to all kinds of Latin dances, such as Salsa and Merengue. And for moms like Laura Crates (ph), Eva David Greenglass(ph), they feel they have not only found the perfect baby friendly workout, but have also become a part of a great social mummy network.
Female Speaker: I love taking Salsa Babies. Initially after I gave birth, I was not in a greater shape, came to Salsa Babies class, amazing workout, the kids love it. She is very alert and awake for most of the class and then she fall to sleep after it, because I guess its bit of a workout for her too.
Female Speaker: No, I love it. I used to dance growing up. So it is something to do. It's got good rhythm and fitness, and she loves it. She's always at sleep at the end of every class and I like the ladies that are nice to me, to other moms.
Melanie Raposo: And for those moms out there who can't dance, not to worry, because all dance skill levels are welcome and with these simple to follow dance steps that Jennifer Torres showed me, you'll be dancing up a storm in no time.
Jennifer Torres: So throughout the class, we want to emphasize, we'll just pretends here that you've got the baby on you. So you want to keep your shoulders back so that the weight is not pulling you forward, a nice tight tummy, okay, which you already have. Knees are relaxed, so that your hips can move. So it's all about feeling sexy, getting those hips moving again.
So we're going to start by shifting our weight back on the right foot. So we're going to rock, rock, we hold in the middle with this little pause. Sometimes I like to do a little clap or snap just to emphasize that you're holding the beat, then we're going to go forward with our left, same idea. We rock, rock together and pause. So back with the right, we hold, forward with the left, we hold, again back.
Melanie Raposo: That's part of all. By the end of the class, the mums are relaxed and the babies are fast asleep. For more information about Salsa Babies, visit www.salsababies.com.
