Image: Breitbart.com BY JASMINE BAILEY With a Democrat in the White House for a second consecutive term, Republicans are pushing for changes to the Electoral College. KKTV: “The focus is on altering the winner takes all system of distributing the Electoral College votes. In most states the candidate who gets the most votes also get all the electoral votes.” Maine and Nebraska already split their electoral votes by congressional district, but this proposal — endorsed by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, would extend that measure to the entire country. He told the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel: "I think it’s something that a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at. [Such a system] gives more local control [to the states].” Think Progress reports that so far the idea has gained quite a bit of support. Leaders from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin have expressed support for the plan. And just to point out— they are all republicans. But Democrats have not been very supportive of this new proposed change— saying Republicans are aiming to “rig” the elections. Former Democratic congressman of Pennsylvania, Joe Sestak told Fox news: “Bottom line is— we have bad enough gerrymandering as it is within the states, so when we start messing around with the sanctity with the natural process we’ll have a bigger problem.” And a commentator on MSNBC said: “This is an example of— if you don’t like the outcome, change the rules. Now here’s a president who won 51 percent of the popular vote, Romney won 47 percent. That settles the question of how the electoral college votes are decided.” But even the president himself said he would support changes to the Electoral College during a 2004 debate with Alan Keyes. “Eliminate the Electoral College, Yes or No?” Obama: “Yes.” “Yes?” Obama: “I think at this point it is breaking down.” So, what would the 2012 election have looked like under Priebus’ proposed plan? According to The Nation —" divvying up Electoral College votes based on congressional district wins would yield significantly better results for the GOP."   “In Wisconsin, where Democrat Barack Obama won in 2012 by a wider margin than he did nationally, the president would only have gotten half the electoral votes. In Pennsylvania, where Obama won easily, he would not have gotten the twenty electoral votes that he did; instead, under the Priebus plan, it would have been eight for Republican Mitt Romney, twelve for Barack Obama.” If the proposal is passed— it would be up to the states on how they will allocate electoral college votes.
