No more bullfighting."STORYLINE: Hundreds of anti-bullfighting protesters gathered in front of the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City on Sunday to call for an end to the sport. Covered in fake blood and with banderillas (bullfighting spears) in their backs, protesters lay inert in the glaring sunshine to highlight the suffering of bulls. They were surrounded by more protesters, who were holding placards and banners against bullfighting. The protest was organised by AnimaNaturalis, an international activist group which promotes animal rights. Israel Arriola, anti-bullfighting protester and spokesperson for AnimaNaturalis in Mexico, criticises the practice of bullfighting not only on grounds of cruelty, but also because he feels the sport promotes negative values.AnimaNaturalis say that the sport claims the lives of around 9 thousand bulls and 400 horses each year. Despite the mistreatment of animals being considered an offence under city regulations, bullfighting is allowed to continue due to an exception in the Law for the Protection of Animals.(****END****)
