This is in response to the apparent suicide of the switchboard operator who took their call. NBC News has the video. “...the DJs who made the call had no comment, but were said to be deeply shocked... Their employer said they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.” Mel Greig and Michael Christian called the hospital where Kate Middleton was being treated, pretending to be the Queen of England and Prince Charles. In this video posted on YouTube before the nurse’s death, the presenters explain they weren’t expecting to get a call through to the duchess’ private nurse. Greig: “They were the worst accents ever and we were sure at least one hundred people before us had tried the same thing!” Both Greig and Christian are relative newcomers to 2Day FM. According to Australian outlets , Greig is somewhat of a pseudo-celebrity having appeared on The Amazing Race Australia in 2011. Christian , on the other hand, was reportedly hired only a few days before the incident after “labouring for several years in relative obscurity.” Sources report the two DJs have apologized for the incident, but The Guardian reports 2Day FM has a history of inflammatory comments and backfired stunts carried-out by on-air talent. Most recently, Kyle Sandilands , co-host of a weekday morning show, received criticism after reportedly calling an Afghan child born with additional limbs “spider baby.” In August of 2009 , Sandilands sparked public outrage following a lie detector test gone wrong when a 14-year-old girl admitted she had been raped. As The Daily Mail reported, action was taken against the station following the incident when...   “...the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) imposed a licence condition for five years ordering 2Day FM, owned by Southern Cross Austereo, to 'provide increased protection for children participating in hosted entertainment programs.’” The Twitter accounts of both Greig and Christian have disappeared in the wake of the apparent suicide. There is no word on when or if the hosts will be back on the air.
