This was Tetyana Chornovil a few days ago. She's a prominent Ukrainian opposition activist, known for investigating corruption among senior state officials. And this is Chornovil on Christmas Day. Police say the 34-year-old was beaten up, and left in a ditch by unknown assailants near the capital Kiev overnight. Her attack happened hours after the publication of an article she wrote about the assets of top government officials. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) PROTESTER OLEH SHAPORENKO, SAYING: "They beat a woman, a mother. How could they do this?" On Wednesday, hundreds of opposition activists and their leaders rallied on her behalf outside the Interior Ministry. They think Chornovil's attack is linked to her activism. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) OPPOSITION LEADER ARSENIY YATSENYUK SAYING: "I have a dashcam, which was in Tanya's car. We found it and it recorded how Tanya was followed, how they tried to stop her, and practically, this is the main evidence which could help to find the attackers." Kiev has been gripped by anti-government street protests for weeks. The number of protesters is declining. But analysts say a growing frustration among the ones who remain could lead to violent clashes. And the beating of a prominent activist could only reignite that unrest.
