Rhiannon Ally: Welcome back to Better, happy Monday everyone. Up next, easy steps to get your body reunion ready. And we’re introducing you to the very cool and very hip R&B singer Steph Jones. But first, it's prom season. And this year, high school girls are bringing sexy back. Forget the basics. Dresses this year are getting a major makeover. Here is a look at the new trends that are more risqué than ever before.
From wild prints to cutout fronts and backs, the days or dressing like a lady maybe over.
Lisa DeLeo: Most of the prom girls want something that really shows off their body. They work hard. They’re going to the gym. They have these great tans so they are saying “Hey, get me a dress that shows off my figure.”
Rhiannon Ally: One of the hottest and most controversial trends is being called “slutty chic” by some, showing more skin than ever before.
Lisa DeLeo: Go big or go home.
Rhiannon Ally: For Nicole, this dress is more about showing her personality than showing her cleavage but we had to ask what her mom thought. Now, this dress is a little more risqué than some of the other dresses out there. How do you feel about that?
Nancy: Well, I have to say that it does show cleavage but she’s covered everywhere else and I think one that she’s much chosen and it fits correctly. It's very attractive.
Rhiannon Ally: And what about dad? What does he think?
Nancy: Dad, I don’t think there is anything that dad is pleased with. But, he’s so proud of his daughter and he loves that she’s enjoying her prom time.
Rhiannon Ally: Shop owner Lisa DeLeo says not all parents are as understanding about this trend.
Lisa DeLeo: We have seen a few struggles between the mother and daughter. We try not to pick books that are going to cost controversy but every year, there are some and I can tell you that whoever is paying for the dress, usually the mom wins that battle.
Rhiannon Ally: Finding just the right dress can make a break in any girl’s big night. So some girls are finding other ways to standout. Shorter dresses are making a big comeback and celebrities are a big influence.
Lisa DeLeo: Valerie is wearing a celebrity inspired dress which is channeling a dress that Angelina Jolie actually wore to the 2009 Oscars. Angelina wore it in black. And it's a great look because the girls get to look like their favorite celebrity for a fraction of the cost.
Rhiannon Ally: Do you feel like Angelina Jolie?
Valerie: A little bit, yeah.
Rhiannon Ally: Animal prints will also be making a big statement at this year’s dance.
Lisa DeLeo: Animal prints are very, very in style right now. They have been and I think that they always will be. It's a fun, flirty look. Amanda is rocking this look to prom this year because not only can she wear it to prom but she said “Hey, I can wear it to another formal event,” maybe a wedding or perhaps her graduation. So she can definitely get something out of this.
Rhiannon Ally: Old prom dresses are still collecting best in my closet. So this dress, at least you can wear again and again. We all have those pictures. We look back—
Do you think girls are going to look back at some of the trends this year?
Lisa DeLeo: I think the prints, maybe few years down the road. They’re going to be like “Wow” you know? Maybe it won’t be in style then, but right now it is and it is a fun look. All of the dresses, I recommend to the girls with a classy look. You can’t look back 10 years from now and say “Hey, you know that wasn’t in style.” Go with something simple, classic, fun and accessorize.
Rhiannon Ally: It's always fun to look aback at those prom pictures. Yikes! But parents remember, most high schools don’t have a dress code for prom but many won’t let your teen in if she’s dressed inappropriately.
