Hi, I’m Mitch Baker with American Plant Food Company. We’re now ready to place these plants in the container. So, we’re going to drop these out of the pots gently, but we want to coax those roots a bit. So, we’re just going to use our fingers to lightly loosen the root ball. Now, this is our upright or vertical element, so we’re going to place this in the center of the pot, but you could also place it towards the back of the pot. This is a container that will be seen all the way around. So, we’re going to use that vertical element right in the center.

You can use your hands to do all this planting, again, a good pair of gloves helps. If you want to use a trowel, that's fine too, whichever is easier? I just like to get my hands in the soil. This is the Pennisetum Rubrum, an ornamental grass. Now I’m going to combine that with the Mirabilis, an annual, again, loosening those roots slightly. We want those hot colors spilling out over the side of the containers, so we get that right on to the edge. A little more vertical on the back, we’ll use this perennial Coral Bells or Heuchera, loosen up those roots slightly. Snapdragon, just to tie in the colors of the Mirabilis, this great Euphorbia, those tiny white flowers, delicate foliage, this is an explosion of white flowers all season along, that will cascade out over the front as well.

Then we use a Begonia, again to bring out more of the color with Mirabilis. This great Croton ties all that together; the Begonia, the Mirabilis, the Snapdragon. Now, we’re really jamming this pot full of plants. It’s going to be chock-full right now. That's going to cause all of these to really extend and expand during the growing season. That's great. We want a nice full look. We’re putting a Petunia on this side, again for some of that cascading affect and the contrasting color, got room for another Snapdragon back here. I’m going to use another Euphorbia, I’ve got room here.

Now, that’s a container that is full; full of texture, full of color. Everything is going to just continue to develop and fill out. We’ll get some additional height out of the Pennisetum by the end of the season. That’s a colorful pot, that's going to give you color all season along; whether it’s on the deck, on the patio, on the front porch, by the front door, containers like this can be used throughout the garden, the only limitation is your imagination.
