For starters, never allow children to swim without adult supervision, even if they know how to swim. And always keep children under five years old within your reach while at the pool.

Enclose the pool with a fence that’s at least five feet high. Keep the fence clear of chairs or other objects that children can use to climb over. Now, this fence here is okay, but it would be much better if it closed and locked automatically.

Always keep a lifesaving ring near the pool. When you’re at the pool, be sure to keep a cell phone or home phone line with you. You’d never want to have to leave the pool area to get the phone. In the short amount of time that you’re gone, a child can get injured or drown.

Another thing to keep in mind: Don’t use inflatable swimming aids like these as a substitute for supervision or approved life vests. Install pool security devices like infrared motion detectors and underwater wave sensors that will let you know if someone is in the pool when they shouldn’t be.

When not using the pool, keep it completely covered. And remember, never partially open the pool cover. Finally, take the time to learn CPR.
