Police are looking for a blind man, who went missing while traveling from Washington D.C. to his home near Birmingham, Alabama. Here’s WUSA with the story.

 

 

“The phones won’t stop ringing but none of the callers have the information this family wants.

‘He’s completely blind.’

Where is 33-year-old Mitchell Malik Smith? A vulnerable adult who is 100% blind and hasn’t been seen since leaving here December 16th.”

 

Smith went blind about ten years ago after being shot in the head. His family says they took him to D.C.’s Union Station and handed him over to Amtrak Red Caps, who they say were supposed to help him on and off his train. But that’s where something went wrong. WTTG has the details.

 

 

“Smith wound up on a train heading to New Orleans instead. A woman from Virginia who sat across the aisle from Smith tells FOX 5 she heard Amtrak workers tell him he could get off at Charlotte and take another train several hours later to Birmingham. She then watched the workers help Smith off the train at the Charlotte stop.  in all the confusion, Smith told workers he wanted to go back to D.C. and Amtrak was supposed to have put him back on a train to D.C.”

 

That last part of the story -- coming from the Charlotte detective investigating Smith’s case. WJLA has the latest information from authorities.

 

 

“So if what the detective says is true, Mitchell has been back here in the Washington area possibly since December 17th. We reached out to Amtrak and to the North Carolina detectives. They both say more information will be forthcoming once the holidays are over.”

 

 

Smith often wears dark glasses and carries a red and white cane. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call 911.
