(Image source: WKMG ) BY DAN KENNEDY The University of Central Florida shut down its campus Monday morning after police found a man’s body, an assault weapon and explosives inside a campus dorm. Some details are still unavailable, but Central Florida News 13 highlights the chain of events starting at 12:20 a.m. when campus police responded to a fire alarm at the “Tower 1” dorm. While at that call, they received a 911 call about a man with a gun inside that dorm. When they arrived, they found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The Orlando Sentinel reports the man is a student. Next, police say they found an assault weapon and improvised explosives inside the same dorm room as the body. That dorm is now a crime scene and its students have been evacuated. “Tower 1, which houses about 500 students, was evacuated and remains evacuated as this is still a very active crime scene. An adjacent parking garage, that’s parking lot G, is also closed as a precautionary measure.” “You never want this to happen on your campus but what makes me feel better is that we have such a talented police department that knows how to respond to these and responds with the best interests of our students and our campus community.” An alert on UCF’s website confirms the campus is closed until noon Monday, adding that counseling and food is available. Campus police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are all on the scene and investigating.
