We just announced this morning that we are deploying two patriot batteries here to Turkey, along with the troops necessary to man those batteries so that we can help have the kind of missile defense it may very well need in dealing with threats that come out of Syria. We were very concerned about some intelligence that we received recently that they had in fact they had moved to begin to arm weapons that would involve use of chemical and biological material. And that was the reason the president of the United States, the secretary of state and myself made very clear to the Syrian regime that they must not under any circumstances use chemical warfare against their own people that there would be serious consequences if they cross that line.VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:The U.S. will send two batteries of Patriot missiles and 400 troops to Turkey as part of a NATO force meant to protect Turkish territory from potential Syrian missile attack, the Pentagon said Friday.Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed a deployment order en route to Turkey from Afghanistan calling for 400 U.S. soldiers to operate two batteries of Patriots at undisclosed locations in Turkey.
